An ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a visual image of your pregnancy.

Why you need an ultrasound

You learn three important facts from an ultrasound:

• How far along you are in your pregnancy
• If the pregnancy is viable (up to 20% of all known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage)
• Where the pregnancy is located (if it’s located outside of your uterus, it’s potentially life-threatening)

How far along you are in your pregnancy

You need to know the number of weeks you’ve been pregnant if you are considering abortion. The type of procedure you receive is determined by how far along you are. If you’re considering adoption or parenting, knowing how far along you are will help determine an approximate due date for future planning.

If the pregnancy is viable

A viable pregnancy means it’s developing normally and continuing to grow. Because a possible 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage, an ultrasound lets you know if your pregnancy is viable or not. If you’ve had a miscarriage, there’s no reason to schedule an appointment for an abortion.

Where the pregnancy is located

Although rare, some pregnancies do not form in the uterus. These are known as ectopic pregnancies. They can be very dangerous and require you to visit a health care professional immediately.
